British tech firms iProov and Mvine, funded by a £75,000 government grant, are developing facial recognition systems that could serve as Covid vaccine passports for private businesses like pubs. The system would allow businesses to verify customers' vaccination or test status by matching their facial image against NHS databases, eliminating the need for manual ID checks.
The scheme contrasts with earlier government statements opposing mandatory vaccines or passports. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi have suggested that vaccine passports could be used in pubs and possibly places of worship, marking a significant shift in their previous stance. The potential use of this technology has raised concerns about privacy and "algorithmic discrimination," drawing comparisons to China's social credit system. The government has not yet officially endorsed such a scheme, with ongoing reviews led by Michael Gove to assess its ethics and feasibility.
